Scripture:

11 And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12 And she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jar.

1 Kings 17:11-12

Reflection:

When Elijah went to Zarephath, he found the widow at the gate just as the Lord promised.  She was gathering kindling for a fire to make a meal – a last meal – for her and her son.

The prophet asked her for a little water and a little bread, to which the widow replied, ‘I have nothing baked – only have a handful of flour and a little oil…’

Hmm… ‘Nothing… a handful… a little…’

Have you ever looked at your resources or circumstances and felt like you were overmatched, underprepared, and lacking?  You are not alone.

Sometimes it feels like God requires more of us than what we have, demanding more than what we possess…

Take a closer look.  The widow says: “I have nothing…”

Look again. She says: “Only a handful…”

Now look again at her reply: “Just a little…”

Let that sink in.

Feeling empty, inadequate, limited?

Don’t!

God does not require of us what we do not have, but He does require what we do…

Nothing.  A handful. A little.  Give that to God and you will discover that God specializes in turning nothing to something, a handful into a harvest, and what we call little into more than enough!

Trust God with what you have.  Give Him your emptiness, inadequacies, your insecurities, and you will discover that your lack was only an illusion!  This is God’s grace to us!

Prayer:

Lord, help me to trust you with my lack, my little, and my losses.  Help me to see with fresh eyes the abundance that defines your economy.  Out of nothing, ex nihilo, you made all things.  So, today I offer you my ‘nothing, my handful, and my little.’  I trust you to provide!

In Jesus’ Name.

Amen

Good Morning, I love you all!
